Rose water is amazing to have in your beauty routine. I’ve recently been dealing with some skin issues so I’ve been adding simple things to my skincare routine to help out. I first learned about rose water years ago in cosmetology school. A few ladies made their own and it was so simple. It is not only easy to make but it can be used for multiple things.
I make rose water 2 different ways. The easier way is to add roses into boiling water and let it cool. The second way is through distillation which is basically collecting rose water indirectly in a separate dish inside a pan. This one comes out clear and more concentrated. When picking roses you can use just about any you like but organic pesticide free is best so you won’t have potentially harmful stuff on your skin. Lucky you if you have a rose bush or a friend that does. I use to have a beautiful pink one when I lived in Hawaii years ago. Good times lol!
Let’s start! Here are the instructions for both methods.
*As with any DIY please do a patch test first if you think you may be allergic. Discontinue use if you experience any irritation.
Boiled Water Method Materials
1-2 Roses
1c Purified or Distilled Water
1 pot
Metal Strainer
Container for storage
Spoon
Clear Water Method Materials
(Same as above)
1 heavy coffee cup
A clear lid (without hole) or deep plate
1 bag of ice
Boiled Water (Simple) Method
- Pour about 1 cup of water into the pan and bring to boil.
- While you are waiting for the water to boil take 1-2 roses and separate the petals from the stem. (I use a 1:1 ratio. One rose to one cup of water but you can add more if you like.)
- Place the rose petals in the pan with the water. Once the water starts to boil turn down the heat to medium.
- Stir the roses and turn off the heat once the roses start to lose color. (This takes no more than 10 mins.)
- Let the roses sit in the pan until it cools.
- Stain the cooled rose water into a container for storage.
At this time the rose water is complete. You can leave it out or store it in the frig for about a week. It lasts a bit longer when refrigerated. I keep mine in the frig because the cold spray feels so refreshing on the skin.
I like to make a custom blend depending on my skin needs. I’ve recently been adding a few drops of geranium essential oil and a few drops of sweet orange oil. Both of these oils are good for acne and inflammation reduction. Orange oil has added anti-aging benefits which are a big plus. This mixture smells AMAZING.
Clear Rose Water Method
- Take 1-2 roses and remove the petals then place them in the pan.
- In the center of the pan place your heavy coffee mug, moving the roses around the cup.
- Add water to the pan, avoiding the cup in the center. Just enough to cover the roses still using the 1:1 ratio.
- Now turn on the heat and bring the water to a boil. Once it boils turn the heat down low.
- Cover the pan with a lid or deep plate. If using a lid turn it the opposite way.
- On top of the lid or plate add ice. The ice helps to keep more stem inside the pan so more water can be collected. As the ice melts remove the water and add more ice. (Be careful as the steam is hot.)
- Keep on heat for about 20 mins, longer if you want more rose water collected in the cup.
- Once you have collected enough in the coffee cup allow everything to cool.
- Place the cooled clear rose water in a storing container.
The clear rose water will last for months sitting on the counter or longer in the frig. If you have more water in the pan you can strain it and follow the same steps for the boiled water method.
Usage
I use rose water to refresh my skin before makeup or after I wash my face to prep for moisturizer. It is a great toner for the skin, refreshing makeup, or to remove the powder look from very matte foundations. Rose water can also be used to wet your makeup brush prior to applying metallic shadows or highlighters.
To use it for makeup application or skincare I pour the rose water into an old MAC fix+ spray bottle. (Or any other spray bottle you can get your hands on.) Fill it then spray away.
It can also be used to soothe dry, post acne peeling, or sunburned skin. Mix equal parts of aloe vera juice and rose water into a spray bottle. Shake well and spray on affected areas.
Another great way to use it is in face and body scrubs. I will be making a DIY rose scrub and rose oil so stay tuned for that!
Have you tried rose water? What is your favorite way to make it?
