Best Skin Prep and Foundation for Mature and Dry Skin

best dry skin foundation

Having dry skin is not an issue I deal with normally. I’m an oily skin girl all the way. However, I have dealt with dry skin while treating acne in the past. Many of my clients have dry or mature skin (which tends to be on the drier side). Skincare is the most important thing to consider before even thinking about what makeup you apply on your skin.

So let’s talk about it.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating the skin helps to smooth away dry patches. A physical or chemical exfoliant prior to makeup application is key. The Clarisonic, Foreo Luna, any facial brush, or any non-abrasive facial scrub are all examples of physical exfoliants. Chemical exfoliants such as AHA, BHA, lactic acid, and glycolic acid are effective at renewing the skin as well. Doing this will allow the skin to feel smooth, look rejuvenated, and allow moisturizing products to penetrate the skin more efficiently. This is great to incorporate in your evening or morning skincare routine. Chemical exfoliants typically are best to use at night.

Skin prep

Beautiful long-lasting makeup starts with a fresh well-prepped canvas. If your skin is exfoliated and smooth your makeup will look better and you are less likely to have dry patches or makeup laying odd in certain spots. Using a good hydrating primer or moisturizer prior to foundation application that mixes well will help keep your skin looking fresh and lasting all throughout the day.

Currently, my favorite primer and set duo are by Two Faced. The products are called Hangover RX 3-in-1(primer and setting)Spray and the Two Faced Hangover RX Replenishing Face Primer. These products work well on all skin types.

I spray the skin, apply primer, foundation, then set all the makeup with the spray to finish. Alternatively, gel moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid work well under foundations and tend to hydrate without disturbing foundation when allowing it to fully absorb into the skin first. A gel moisturizer like the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel works great.

Foundation

I’ve been testing out foundations that work well on dry and mature skin for some time now. I received a request for recommendations and I wanted to make sure I could provide some great options. When looking for the right foundation knowing what type of finish a foundation has makes a difference with how it will look on the skin.

On dry and mature skin types I enjoy using foundations that have a glow or natural finish to compliment the skin. Matte foundations tend to emphasize dry patches. Below are my current favorite foundations.

Drugstore foundation options

Revlon Candid, Loreal: True Match Lumi, Infallible fresh Wear, Infallible Pro-Glow, and Cover Girl Vitalist Healthy Elixir.

High-end foundation options

Too Faced Born This Way, Marc Jacobs Shameless Youthful-Look, Pat McGrath Sublime Perfection, and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk.

Of these foundations, Revlon Candid and Too Faced Born This Way have a thicker consistency. I find thinner formulas are best for mature skin because they lay smoother on fine lines and wrinkles. Another foundation that works well is RCMA. This cream foundation is highly pigmented but most users say there’s a bit of a learning curve with the application.

Application

My favorite way to apply foundation is with a damp beauty sponge. This method allows the product to be pushed onto the skin while adding a bit of moisture. To build up more coverage a dense synthetic brush works best.

What are your favorite foundations?

Thanks for hanging out!
