Bentonite Clay masks are an essential part of my natural hair routine. Since I only co-wash my hair it’s important to do a monthly deep cleansing to prevent any scalp build-up. The clay works by removing toxins embedded in the epidermis to reveal clean and healthy skin. I also use this mixture for my face. If I have any leftover mask from my hair I normally use it on my face, which I enjoy just as much.

Aztec Secret-Indian Healing Clay
I use the brand Aztec Secret for my hair mask. It is referred to as Healing Clay, from Death Valley California. The brand claims it is sun-dried for up to six months in temperatures up to 134 degrees. It does not contain additives, fragrances, or animal products. I normally purchase it from Amazon. Prices vary depending on size and vendor.
You can find out more about this amazing green clay, and its properties on the company’s website here.
Bentonite Clay Hair Mask Instructions
Materials
Glass Bowl (or any bowl that is not metal)
Plastic Spoon
Towel
Spray Bottle (filled with warm water)
Apple Cider Vinegar
Bentonite Clay
Shower Cap (or a plastic bag lol) (optional)
Wide-tooth Comb
(4) Large Butterfly Clamps
Steps
1. Start off with damp unwashed hair. I put my hair into 4 sections, finger detangle, do 4 loose flat twists, and clip each section away with butterfly clamps. I make sure to spray my hair with warm water to allow the mask to penetrate better.
2. Take a glass bowl and mix equal parts clay to apple cider vinegar with a plastic spoon. You can also use water but I prefer organic apple cider vinegar. The mixture will start to foam up a bit which is normal. I like to keep the mixture on the thin side, when it starts to thicken I add a bit more vinegar. Keep stirring until you reach a smooth consistency.
3. Put a towel around your shoulders to help keep your clothing free of the mask. Start with one of the 4 sections and divide it into smaller sections of about 1 inch. Comb the section and detangle again if needed. Add the Bentonite Clay mixture to each section starting with your scalp working it down to the ends.
4. Continue applying the mask until you complete each section. Once finished allow it to dry. Apply a shower cap or a plastic bag. You can also allow it to air dry without covering.
5. Once your mask is finished. Rinse it out throughly. Make sure to apply warm water to break the cast of the mask then massage your scalp while rinsing until your hair and scalp are free of clay.
6. Apply your favorite moisturizing mask, and continue styling. I usually use SheaMoisture mask or Mielle Organics-Babassu Oil, Mint Deep Conditioner.
