Deep conditioners are great for hair. Doing one at least once a month will keep your hair and scalp in optimal condition. Heated deep conditioners are even better for the hair because the heat allows the conditioner to penetrate more. There are various deep conditioners for different hair needs so everyone can benefit from them.
Today I wanted to share with you this quick DIY that will make deep conditioning with heat super easy.
Let’s begin!
Materials Needed
Threaded Sewing Machine
1 Towel (the thinner the better)
1 Yard of Fabric (add more to make a larger cap)
Scissors
Fabric Tape
Fabric Pins (optional)
***Make sure the fabrics used are aluminum free as they will be microwaved.
Instructions
- Take your towel and lay it flat then cut the sides to create a triangle. (This will serve as your guide) The measurements I used were about 23 1/2 on the right and left side and 34 inches on the bottom. Feel free to make yours longer. I would not go much shorter than this length though.
- Place the towel on top of the other fabric and cut around it so that you have 2 triangular pieces.
- With the fabric pattern side down take both cut pieces and pin the perimeter together. (optional) I didn’t pin them together because this was such a quick project.
- Sew all around the triangle leaving about a 1-2 inch opening.
- Pull the fabric right side out and repeat step 4. This time sew the small opening making sure to fold in any extra fabric to make a clean seam.
- Next, with the towel side outwards (while holding the right and left corners) wrap the cap around your head. Lightly push the top pointed area of the triangle down on your head. This will give you a guide of where to sew next. (See photo or video below for reference)
- Sew each opening on the right and left to create a hood.
- Lastly, turn the cap right side out.
Heat Conditioning Cap Usage
- After applying your favorite deep conditioner put your hair into a shower cap.
- Take your DIY conditioning cap and wet it. Ring out any excess water.
- Place the cap in the microwave for 10 seconds. Depending on how hot the water was initially you will need to heat the cap longer. Heat the cap in 10-second increments. 40 seconds is the perfect time for me. ***BE CAREFUL when removing your cap you want it warm not scalding hot!
- Place the heated cap on top of the shower cap and tie it to secure. Leave it on for the remainder of your treatment. It is ok that it cools, you can always reheat it for a longer treatment on leave it as is.
Upcycle
This DIY works great using any old fabric like an old dress or shirt that you don’t plan on wearing. No need to buy a brand new towel either use what you have.
Try this out and let me know what you think! This is also great when you add a little lavender or peppermint oil to the cap after it is heated. It makes for a calming spa experience.
If you don’t sew or just want to try this technique without a cap a regular warm towel works too… it’s just not as dope as this lol!
Thanks for hanging out today!
