What Bronzer is Right for You? | How to Choose the Best Bronzer

bronzer

We are starting to see a lot more sun around here…yay! With beautiful warm weather comes tans and summer glow. No matter what your skin tone is having a nice glow or dimension while wearing makeup is always flattering. Bronzer is a wonderful product to achieve just that…when used correctly.

Bronzer is a product used to warm up the skin and to mimic a natural suntan. You can use this product anytime but it is clever when used in the fall/winter season to help supplement for the sun you would not typically be receiving.

Today I would like to give you some tips on how to choose the right one for you.

Bronzer 101

Shade

To choose the best shade a simple guideline is to pick a product that is one or two shades darker than your skin tone. I like using my regular complexion powder in a deeper shade for bronzing. I find that it compliments my skin tone the best. If you’re looking to purchase a separate product there are a few brands that make great bronzers like Anastasia Beverly Hills, Guerlain, Makeup Geek, and Becca. These companies offer a variety of shades and the undertones are very natural looking.

Formula

Cream, liquid, mousse, powder, gel, the list goes on. There are so many different formulas just like foundation. A good guide is to pick a formula that compliments your skin type like your foundation. It is also good to keep in mind that bronzer is typically layered on top of another product. You want to make sure that all complexion products work well together.

Powder bronzers typically layer well over most formulas. If your skin is extremely dry try to find a mineral based powder that won’t over dry the skin.

Matte versus shimmer

Matte bronzers are my favorite because they don’t have glitter or shimmer in them. I prefer bronzing in areas needed and highlighting in other areas of my choosing. Some people like to have a more intense glow on the skin. In this case a bronzer with shimmer might be more convenient for them. Bronzing products that have shimmer are nice for dry to normal skin types as they can offer a more dewy appearance.

Some bronzers contain multiple colors that you mix together before applying to the face. These type of formulas typically provide more warmth. Make sure to use with a very light hand.

Placement and application

For application you want to apply the product where the sun would naturally hit your face. Just envision your skin after spending some time in the sun. Our faces and features are unique to us so everyones bronzing placement is a bit different. Bronzing is not a sculpting process like contour.

*A few areas where the sun would normally hit the face are the forehead, cheeks, and jawline.

When applying bronzer less is more, start off with a little product on a large brush and build up in areas where needed.

Thanks for hanging out today!
